A Royal Opening for the 10th Anniversary Celebrations

Location: The Falkirk Wheel
Date: 07/07/2012 - 07/07/2012, 10am to 4.30pm
Suitability: Everyone

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal will be visiting The Falkirk Wheel on Friday 6th July to officially open the 'Wheel 10' tenth anniversary celebrations, with everyone is also invited along on Saturday 7th July to mark the opening of The Falkirk Wheel and the reopening of the Forth & Clyde and Union canals a decade ago.

Join Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal as she marks the opening of the celebrations by unveiling celebratory artworkdesigned by local schoolchildren. Come along to the Wheel between 12.30 and 3.30 on Friday 6th July. (Please note that the Cafe, Gift Shop and Boat Trips will be closed on Friday 6th July. External catering facilities will be available on the site, and the gift shop and boat trips will recommence from 3.30pm.)

Join us on Saturday 7th July to see a spectacular flotilla of 60 vessels including the oldest passenger boat in Scotland, Ratho Princess (1923) and White Wing from the Scottish Fisheries Museum, as well as a programme brimming full of water and land based activities and performance.

On the water activities include canoeing, 'waterwalkerz' and 'rollers', model boats, fishing taster sessions, a visit from 'HMS Invincible' and a colourful raft race. And not forgetting boat trips along the Forth & Clyde Canal and on The Wheel itself. Many of the flotilla vessels will be open to view, whilst others will be an intimate performance area for storytelling or musical sets.

On land, there will be lots to see and try. For the more daring, there will be abseiling off the Wheel to try. For those looking for a gentler introduction to the pastimes available on the Scottish canals, there'll be guided walks and a cycling clinic. Added to this, there will be unicycle displays, nine vintage fire engines to explore, rescue demonstrations and the Antonine Guard to watch.

Comperes for the day, Radio Forth and Clyde, will be introduce the performance programme which will run throughout the day and feature a host of local and national bands and musicians. And there'll also be ballet and theatre performances, a comedy slot put on by the forthcoming Funny in Falkirk Festival, storytellers, book readings and facepainting.
